The beautiful ranches that surround Karmel Timmons’ home in Elbert County Colorado became the inspiration for her to pick up her pencil and start drawing horses after a long absence from art. The western lifestyle was never at the forefront of Karmel’s mind as she belonged to a military family and lived in some faraway places. It wasn’t until Karmel met and married her husband, Matt, and moved to Elbert that she first understood why so many people are passionate about horses. After she and Matt purchased four horses of their own she was compelled to capture their beauty as well as their personalities with her pencil. After seeing her first drawing her husband urged her to quit her job and become a professional artist.

Karmel works exclusively in pencil, although very time consuming, this medium allows her to capture all the detail, textures, and depth of her subjects. Her primary focus is on horses but she enjoys drawing people and wildlife as well.

Karmel has won many awards for her efforts. They include the People’s Choice award for four years running (2005-2008) at the Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale in Denver, Colorado and was the featured artist at that show in 2008, and the People’s Choice award at the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale in 2004.

Publications that have featured Karmel’s work include Southwest Art, Western Art Collector, Western Horseman, Eclectic Horseman, Wildlife Art, Australian Quarter Horse and others.
