Tim Tanner

Tim Tanner was born and raised on a small horse ranch in northern Utah, with family roots extending back through a long line of ranchers, miners, and pioneers in northwestern Utah and southwestern Montana. As a young man, if Tim wasn't drawing or painting he was busy in his Dad's saddle shop making everything from buckskin clothing to full-size Indian teepees to muzzle-loaders. After high school, Tim attended Utah State University, completing a BFA degree in art with a minor in American history. He also studied for a year at the California Art Institute, one of the West's leading art schools. At an early age Tim knew that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of some of the artists who have been instrumental in establishing western and wildlife are. Individuals like Howard Terpning, Bob Kuhn, Bob Abbett and Ken Carlson. These artists were free-lance illustrators before they achieved their status as some of the country's leading fine artists. So after art school, Tim made his home on the East Coast to be near the New York publishing market. His illustrations grace the covers of dozens of western paperback titles, including the cover painting for Streets of Laredo, the sequel to Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. Previous clients also include Field & Stream, Outdoor Life and Reader's Digest. Tim now makes his home with his wife and daughter at the base of Grand Teton National Park in Teton Valley, Idaho. His studio window looks out into a beautiful wooded view of the wildlife surrounding the hew-log home. Tim's artwork is now in demand for Art Galleries and collectors. His current works usually revolve around historical hunting and fishing scenes, early mountain men and frontiersmen, and Native American scenes. Tim is an easy-going, tall and lanky, likeable sort of guy. He likes good joke and isn't afraid to laugh at himself. His artwork occasionally shows a humorous twist or predicament. When not painting, he can usually be found on horseback up in the hills or waist deep in his favorite fly-fishing stream.
